CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Philip J. Coulson
Age: 50
Canon: Marvel Cinematic Universe: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D
Canon Point: Post: Season 2 Episode 22
Character Information:
The most complete History of Phil Coulson's History :D"Nick Fury: That truth lives inside you, Coulson. Before it was torn apart, S.H.I.E.L.D. was a lot of moving parts. Guys like you were the heart. Now you'll be the head. "
Personality:Phil is a good man. He’s a hard worker who takes his job seriously but also knows when to smile or even relax a bit within his work. He is a very reliable guy. If Coulson makes a promise there is a 99.9% chance that he will do as he promised, or die trying, and he’s not one to throw that Promise word out there a lot, because if he says it he means it.
Coulson is a smiler, or at least he has been for some time. He uses his smile as a tool while talking to others. Either to defuse a problem or start one. His smiles can be simple, soft, kind, or even smug, mocking and self assured that ‘you are an idiot and I will finish you’. For the most part his smiles meet his eyes with a twinkle, though this has been dulling out more and more over the years. Like he’s slowly losing the smile from his eyes and only putting on a mask. Times have been tough lately however.
In regards to friends and family, he has very little of those left. His mother and father are both dead and he was an only child (that we know of). Nick Fury is the closest thing to a mentor he’s had since growing up, and he is devoted to the man unquestionably. If you are apart of his team, you are apart of his world. This doesn’t mean that every Agent he ever worked with or supervised is someone he holds close, but people like Clint Barton, Natasha Romanoff, John Garrett, and Jasper Sitwell had all come in very close to what he considered trustworthy “Friends” as well as “Co-Workers”. Half of those names were HYDRA and betrayed him and everything he stood for. This brings us to his new team. The entire team, after a short while, were people he considered “his” and that he would do anything for. When one of them turned on his team, he felt wounded, betrayed, and it upset him that he let Ward in close enough that he cared about what happened to him.
It’s clear he cares very much for Agent May and has worked for her for years, and his fatherly side has shown often for Jemma Simmons and Skye throughout the show. Even Fitz and Hunter have gotten very close to his inside. If any one of them betrayed him now he might take it very personally, but he’d still be very controlled about his anger, or as controlled as he can be.
There is a part in the second season where he very matter of factly points out that he thinks of Skye as his family. The only family he has left. Though he has no family left but those people he lets in, he does feel that family is very important. He won't settle down and have one of his own (he can’t, really) but he does hold a high value on family in general.
As I said before, Phil is a very loyal guy when that loyalty has been earned. There are some people that have earned his loyalty so strongly that he will turn his entire world upside down, keep secrets from people HE trusts, just to help those people. In example, Nick Fury, Phil’s original Supervising Officer is the one person that he is so devoted to that it borders on blindness. While he was building his team with Agent May and others he was also keeping secrets from every one of them, even May, who he generally trusts with sensitive material. In this regard he’s a pretty good liar and secret keeper, which could be a good and bad trait all in one.
The man isn’t science lab and rocket science smart, but he is intelligent. A good tactician and analytical minded man, Phil has had years of experience with fighting, strategy, war, problem solving and leadership roles. He’s got a bit of street smart to him as well, but there are still some things he can’t manage with absolute ease. Like the first time he and Ward tried to use a projection data table, the two had to fight around a bit to get it to work at all. Once he manages to learn something though, he tends to retain that information and is pretty good with it.
Though the man is a bit stubborn and pig headed when it comes to things he wants or believes in, he can also be a very charming and likable kind of person. Almost fatherly to those who he lets in close, especially his Agents. He always feels responsible for his agents, even the ones that go rogue on them (though in that instance he feels responsible for their actions and why he didn’t manage to see it or stop it before anyone was hurt). He has a bit of a cheesy sense of humor and has a skill with deadpan one liners. When times are tough, if he can manage a smile for someone else and it will help ease their pain? He’ll try, though in recent times it’s become harder and harder for the man to smile. He’s getting harder inside. More shielded.
More shielded, sure, but that doesn’t mean he is completely broken. The man is resilient and tends to bounce back after short periods of time. When things start looking their darkest, he pushes through it and tries to get back to his feet. His main motivation for all this is the safety and protection of people. Not just the human race in general, but everyone. Humans, Inhumans, creatures and other things that might show up. he’s not fond of aliens, but mostly because so far they have been nothing but trouble, though an alien race/blood did help save him/bring him back from death. He got into this line of work because he wanted to be in a place of power that would allow him to do the best he could to protect everyone. As a boy he was a fan of Captain America and grew up with the man’s stories and history pushing him along to be the best he could become. Because of this as well as some past historical events (it is unknown what happened to his father and mother just yet, but it was said that it was devastating) the man strives to be as strong as he can be for others. To the point of sacrificing his own happiness for them (in example, the cellist, Audrey, in order to keep her safe he has vowed to stay away from her and let her believe he was still dead and gone. It hurts but it’s for the better).
He’s got a bit of a hero complex when it comes down to it. Not in the way that he has to jump into the heat of a fight and be the center of attention, but in the personal way that shows him taking the world on his shoulders if it will make it better for even just one person. He’s no saint, but he’s willing to step in and do the dirty work, even if at the moment he’s Director of SHIELD and really shouldn’t be putting himself in the middle of the fry. He’s not flashy (though the Destroyer Gun is pretty flashy and he DOES love that weapon, and then there is Lola, his car, that is flashy, but a man is allowed some flash, right?), and is willing to be the behind the scenes man or take little to no credit for things. He doesn’t even mind if no one knows he’s the one that saved the day, because in the end all that matters is that the day is saved (if that is at all possible).
At the moment his world IS upside down. A large battle with the Inhumans (misguided and mistreated) just concluded, making him lose a few people while others were wounded badly. His entire team is barely holding together and that is starting to effect him pretty badly, though he’s trying hard to hold on to his sanity. In all of this he lost his hand (while diving to grab something he knew would kill everyone if it broke, so instead he sacrificed himself for them. Thankfully Mack was fast acting and cut his hand off before it spread). The loss of his hand is something he doesn’t talk about and doesn’t want to talk about. He’s not really ready to, or at least he’s not sure he wants to talk to any of them about it. Andrew, Agent May’s ex and a psychologist has offered to help him through it, but he keeps turning him down to talk.
We haven’t seen the full results of the loss of his hand, but the fact that he doesn’t want to talk about it and misdirects comments to other subjects makes me feel like he’s not dealing with it as well as he wants people to think. He’s having to relearn to do a lot of things that should come naturally and it frustrates him (much like he was frustrated after his resurrection when the muscle memory in his hands was slow and not as responsive as it should have been. Then again being dead for seven-ish days can do that to a person, right?).
When faced with becoming a monster, no matter what kind of monster it is, he is going to try hard, at first, to harm no one. It’s against everything he stands for. Hurting people is not what he is in this line of business for. After a while he might try hunting down criminals and bad people, because that would be more like what he does. Take down the bad to help the innocent, but I’m not sure how long that will last. He will try hard to fight everything as much as possible though. After all, being deformed and alien isn’t new to him now, but being a monster is completely different and something he has strived hard not to be.
In short, he’s a strong willed good man who is loyal to a fault but has been hurt in recent events. he’s holding himself together as best he can but he’s starting to get a little worn out. No matter how tired he gets though, he can’t be made to be evil. Or so he thinks. He will fight and die long before he steps over to the dark side (“I’d rather die than join HYDRA.”)."If you try to escape, or play any sort of games with me, I will taze you and watch "Supernanny" while you drool into the carpet."
